Christmas For All?

Amidst the party planning, holidays and general excitement leading up to the Christmas period, employers need to be thinking about the other religious needs and festivals important to their employees.

Hanukkah, Diwali and Eid also take place in the run up to the end of the year and some employees may indeed be celebrating these festivals. So employers need to be aware and more importantly, proactive, in accommodating differing requirements of staff with regard to holiday requests at this time of year or for example a later lunch break to allow fasting during Ramadan.

However, good practice should continue throughout the year, to help ensure employees of all faiths can participate effectively at work. For example, time for Muslims to attend Friday afternoon prayers, may be accommodated into normal routines.

The Muslim Council of Britain has recently been given a grant to help inform businesses and individuals about the responsibilities under the discrimination legislation set out in the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003.
