Time to review what staff do on-line?

 

Most organisations have a policy on e-mail and internet use. But as social networking expands, blogs become more common and at least some of us have a 'Second Life' the chances are that these policies may need a review. Of particular note for international organisations is that what employers can do to monitor internet usage is very different across Europe. In the UK, Russia, Spain and the Netherlands it is usually OK to tell employees they will be monitored and to develop and communicate an appropriate policy. In France however this monitoring would normally have to be agreed collectively and in Belgium, Italy and the Czech Republic the agreement of a works council or external body is needed.
