Sub contracting out of work may be a common occurrence in many organisations, for time & cost saving purposes, but as Adrian Clutterbuck of Accident and Risk Management warns, the issue of Health & Safety does not simply disappear?
Where does responsibility for Health & Safety lie?
It is important for Companies to realise, that when dealing with sub-contractors, Health & Safety is a joint responsibility and they must satisfy themselves that their contractors are competent (i.e. they have sufficient skills and knowledge) to do the job safely and without risks to their own safety or to others.
These responsibilities, if not managed, can lead to events that could prove costly to all parties, in terms of injuries, fines, court appearances and loss of business.
So what can and should you be doing?
In conclusion:-
1.
You must talk to your sub-contractors
2.
You must accept that you share joint health & safety responsibility
