Looking Ahead - Family Friendly Proposals

Further improvements are on the way for working parents. Some of the options under consideration for the future include:

  • Extending the 2 week period of paid paternity leave
  • Increasing paid paternity leave to 90% of current earnings
  • Extending maternity pay to up to 12 months paid leave with the option of transferring some of the paid leave to the partner. As a first step, maternity leave will be extended to nine months from April 2007
  • Introducing (partial) payment for parental leave
  • Extending flexible working to parents with older children and/or those with elderly or disabled relatives
