HR Checklist - Are you HR Compliant for 2007?

We cover a wide variety of topics and issues in our newsletters and we hope you find these useful. However, at the beginning of a new year, we thought it might be helpful to go back to basics and offer a checklist of our top 12 HR legislation compliance basics. Give yourself a pat on the back if you can tick off all the points below. If not, then use this as an action list for action.

 

 

Contracts

Issued before or on the start date, or as a minimum, within 8 weeks of employment? Do they cover all the points required of a 'written statement of employment particulars' 

Offer letter

Issued along with the contract prior to employment, listing the conditions of the offer of employment e.g. qualifications, probationary period, references?

Policies and / or Handbook

To include as a minimum, disciplinary, grievance, dismissal and equal opportunities policies / procedures

HR Administration

Are your HR files up to date and complete? Do they comply with the data protection codes of practice? Can you find what you need when you need it?

Illegal Working

Do you have the proof of an employee's eligibility to work in the UK?

Absence management

Do you record absence, to allow you to monitor overall company absence rates and individual absence rates and patterns? Do you know whether your organisation has a high or low absence rate?

Pay management

Do you know if you provide competitive pay and benefits? Do your staff see a fair and consistent pay strategy? Can you show you provide equal pay?

Labour turnover

Do you measure labour turnover ? Do you know if you have a problem?

Management Training

Do your managers know how to deal with people and performance issues?

Job requirements

Do your staff know what is expected of them and how they should do their jobs? Do staff have the information they need in order to do a good job?

Discipline and Grievance Handling

Do your managers know how to deal effectively and legally with discipline and grievance issues?

Recruitment

Are you recruiting the right people? Is your recruitment successful ? Do you fill your vacancies with top quality people? Are you complying with discrimination and data protection legislation?
